Ukulele on the BBC

banner_somersetThis evening The Night Owls played a couple of live songs on BBC Somerset. We were asked on to the Drive Time show 14ca7bd10d9962ad9706f51e686b90with the lovely Elise Rayner to promote our gig at the Brewhouse Bar on Sunday. We played fully suited and booted with Pat taking lead vocals on ‘Sway’ and Nipper singing ‘Shine On Harvest Moon’. Pat also successfully handled the interview even managing to mention the website.

After the gig we made our way to ‘The Lamb and Flag’ Blagdon Hill, where, fortified by several pints of Otter Bright, we entertained the appreciative pub goers. Thanks to Richard the landlord for letting us play.

Rehearsal Recordings

What with new babies and holidays it has been a while since the last gig, so there has been a lot of practicing to get back up to speed. A couple of weeks ago, we tested out the single mic technique we have been working on and recorded our first rehearsal with Tom since the arrival of his baby. The technique worked well and so here are a couple of songs for your enjoyment. They were recorded live and into a single mic.

Night Owls at the Ukulele Revolution with Bosko and Honey

On Monday evening TUSC moved to a new room in the Constitutional Club for what promised to be one of the most exciting ‘Ukulele Revolution’ concerts so far. First up were The Night Owls, who braved the extreme heat of the room to play a short set of 1930′s classic songs.
The evening continued with a couple of tip-top numbers from Tony, who once again sang his classic version of ‘Walk On the Wild Side‘.
Next up on the bill was the marvelous Jeff Japers who entertained us with his anarchic brand of comedy. His return to TUSC saw him bring his wonderful collection of bells, whistles and sound effects.
And finally Bosko and Honey took to the stage. They talked about their travels around the world on the ‘Ukulele Safari 2008‘ and had the audience on the edge of their seats listening to both original tunes and great cover songs. Bosko and Honey have an amazing stage presence which is really only hinted at in their You Tube videos. The music they play demonstrates the great versatility of the ukulele and together they create a sound which is both thrilling and beguiling.

I was lucky enough to make a recording of the concert and have put together a 30min ‘Ukecast LIVE Special’ featuring music and interviews from the evening.

Night Owls on the BBC

Yesterday The Night Owls appeared on BBC Somerset Sound to promote next weeks Bosko and Honey Gig at TUSC. So here is the performance of The Hypnotist. The mp3 is thanks to Arch, in Australia, who got up at 3:10am to hear us and recorded the broadcast.

New Recordings Added

The Night Owls in the StudioI have added some new recordings to this blog. They were recorded during April in my home studio and I hope they are a good representation of the Night Owls live sound. The ukuleles used were a Kepasa Hollywood concert, Martin style 0 soprano, National soprano, Regal baritone, Ohana SK35 and Eckhaus 1k. To hear the songs go to the Music page.
